A data flow network is a network of concurrently executing processes that can communicate by sending data over channels. A Data Flow Security Engineer uses data flow management to engineer end-to-end data flows and to help reduce the security risks of using buggy or malicious code. The Engineer must have an understanding of data flow concepts such as data schemas, genesis collection, smart data initiative, policy-based routing, Enterprise Data Header (EDH), and integrated systems that will deliver mission data to the source-systems-of-record.

Data flow management is a crucial part of the daily tasks of a system. A Data Flow Security Engineer generally will be responsible for hands-on systems engineering activities for all deployed systems. The scope of activities may range from requirements development (using agile development methodologies) for a new system through design, development support, test, deployment and operational support.

In addition to having experience in Data Flow Management, an effective Data Flow Security Engineer must have experience in Development Environments, Development Methodologies and Database Methodologies. This background will provide the experience to carry out the following activities:

  • Conducting site surveys for planned new system locations
  • Defining the desired capabilities for new systems
  • Performing technical analyses to support system design
  • Supporting the design and development of technical documentation
  • Responding to data calls regarding data integrity, data flow, and system health
  • Creating and maintaining data flows using GUI tools
  • Analyze system performance
  • Performing system audits to ensure intended system functionality and operation and performance requirements are achieved

General Educational Requirements

This position generally requires a Bachelors Degree in a technical field. Industry certifications are required by most employers, and – depending on the employer — a government security clearance may be required.

Additional Qualifications

The Data Flow Security Engineer must be able to lead technical exchanges, brief colleagues on technical concepts and status updates, support troubleshooting and resolution of problems with operational systems, and interface directly with others concerned with the system’s health and status. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required for this position.
