A Cyber Security Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) has overall responsibility for protecting critical infrastructure systems. The ideal candidate for this position has the ability to provide efficient analysis of relevant cybersecurity metrics including compliance, performance, and incident reporting. The SME will have experience with innovative technologies, capabilities development, rapid acquisition processes and will have a proven track record of promoting and maintaining cyberspace mission objectives.

The SME will be expected to carry out the following tasks to ensure the integrity of critical infrastructure systems:

  • Provide SME level input and support throughout the enterprise.
  • Modify existing software to correct errors, adapt to new hardware, or improve threat software performance.
  • Develop and apply statistical methods to troubleshoot network issues.
  • Identify project risks and determine the administrative or engineering means to mitigate the risk.
  • Suggest policy recommendations and solutions.
  • Coordinate Research and Development activities to ensure technical goals are considered.
  • Formulate training objectives, scenarios, and procedures to develop training course content.
  • Develop reports to support compliance and implementation status.

 

General Educational Requirements

Most employers require a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology Management, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Forensics, or another related field. Some employers will substitute experience and demonstrated ability in lieu of part of all of the degree requirements. For upper level positions, some employers require a Master’s of Science Degree in a technical field from an accredited college or university. Industry certifications generally are required for this position, and a current Secret or Top Secret government clearance may be required by some employers.

 

Additional Qualifications

In addition to the required technical background, a Cyber Security Technical SME must have strong oral and written communication skills, staffing and analytical skills, and the ability to work independently. It is important that the SME has the ability to interact effectively with technical personnel and managers at all levels.
