Keeping networks running smoothly and protecting sensitive data takes constant monitoring and proper cyber security management. This means that organizations must reassess their information security measures and must rely on the expertise of Cyber Security Operations Managers to protect information systems and computer networks from cyber attacks, intrusions, malware and other types of data breaches.

Cyber Security Operations Managers are responsible for knowing where a network’s possible vulnerabilities are and providing mitigation strategies to combat them. An effective Cyber Security Operations Manager will have experience in a technical security role including network security, operating system security, Internet or Web security, Data Loss Prevention, anti-malware systems, and penetration and vulnerability testing. The Manager also must have considerable knowledge of networking fundamentals and tools and deep experience with cyber threat intelligence and analysis, security monitoring and incident response.

The responsibilities of a Cyber Security Operations Manager generally include:

  • protecting organizations from data loss and service interruption
  • establishing network security policies and procedures
  • planning and implementing security measures on all information systems and networks
  • regulating access to information and training staff on proper use of information systems
  • conducting cyber readiness assessments to gauge the effectiveness of the overall security program, security risk management and regulation compliance
  • performing security incident triage including determining the scope, urgency, and potential impact of a threat; identifying the specific vulnerability; and making recommendations that enable quick and effective remediation

General Educational Requirements

The position of Cyber Security Operations Manager generally requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a field such as Information Technology, Computer Science or Engineering.

Some employers may require only an Associate’s Degree while others may require a Master’s Degree. Employers generally prefer that a candidate have industry certifications and some may require government security clearance.

 

Additional Qualifications

The position of Cyber Security Operations Manager requires an ability to work on multiple phases of complex projects independently, excellent attention to detail and follow through, and strong verbal and written interpersonal communications skills. An effective Cyber Security Operations Manager also will have strong problem solving and organizational skills, an ability to work with multiple teams and a commitment to continuous development and continuing education to stay on top of IT and cyber security trends.
