Effective enterprise architecture is the key to effective cyber security, especially given that the frequency and severity of system and network breaches continue to escalate. Secure systems architecture will prevent downtime, safeguard an organization’s intellectual property, maintain the enterprise’s good reputation and protect critical infrastructure.

The work of the Cyber Security Architect provides the first line of defense of an enterprise’s systems and networks through designing and deploying successful cybersecurity solutions that are agile, strong and fast enough to solve an enterprise’s cyber security challenges.

A Cyber Security Architect is responsible for recommending ways to improve a system’s security through proper selection of hardware and software and through setting, monitoring and enforcing user policies and protocols. The Cyber Security Architect must also set up countermeasures that protect the system when an unauthorized user attempts to gain access to the system.

In addition, a Cyber Security Architect is responsible for the following:

  • Maintaining a high level of expertise in industry trends and technologies related to cyber security.
  • Authoring industry-specific whitepapers and case studies.
  • Presenting authored works at tradeshows and conferences.
  • Leading special projects or investigations that have high cyber security visibility.
  • Determining solution gaps to problems and providing solution proposals.
  • Contributing to product specifications, requirements and literature.

 

General Educational Requirements

This position generally requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Software Engineering from an accredited College or University. Most employers require industry certification, some require a current government clearance, and some may require a Professional Engineer license.

In addition to technical expertise, a Cyber Security Architect should possess the following:

  • Excellent organization, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding of business environments and terminology.
  • An ability to make independent decisions
  • Advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
