The Cyber Information Security Engineer plays a key role in implementing and optimizing the technology required for an enterprise’s security program. The Engineer is  

responsible for protecting the enterprise’s systems and cyber infrastructure and for serving as a technical lead for projects that Install, maintain, and optimize network security infrastructure to meet data protection and system resiliency requirements while preserving the end user’s experience.

The Cyber Information Security Engineer must stay up to date on emerging security threats and countermeasures and must update security platforms to maintain data protection and system resiliency requirements. The Engineer will monitor overall system performance and effectiveness and will assess information security tools to identify and respond to security incidents.

It is important for the Engineer to have knowledge of and be experienced in firewalls, proxies, intrusion detection and prevention, configuration management, vulnerability management, and digital certificate management. Extensive knowledge of networking technologies and protocols and of behavior-based detection and tools is very important for this position as is experience in incidence response, threat intelligence operations, log analysis, malware analysis, network traffic and packet analysis, and penetration testing.

General Educational Requirements

Most employers require a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other related discipline for this position coupled with up to nine years of experience in Systems Engineering. Some employers require a Master’s Degree and up to six years of varied experience in the field. Most require industry certifications, and some may require a security clearance.

Additional Qualifications

In addition to experience with the technological and engineering aspects of this position, a good Cyber Information Security Engineer has experience in Risk Assessment and Threat Intelligence. The Engineer also will demonstrate the following:

  • An ability to handle quantitative and qualitative information
  • Strong system administration capabilities
  • Experience managing relationships across organizational boundaries
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • The ability to rapidly assimilate information and make decisions at short notice
