Government contracts bring with them all types of requirements and regulations, including those that cover program security. The Contractor Program Security Officer is a company’s primary contact with government agencies regarding assigned program security matters and requirements. The Contractor Program Security Officer is responsible for the management, direction, administration, and development of security programs and procedures that have contractually-imposed security requirements.
The Officer operates as part of the team that ensures compliance with government regulations and company security policies so that sensitive and classified information is protected.

In addition to providing security oversight for various project efforts, the Contractor Program Security Officer is responsible for advising on a broad range of program security issues. He/she must demonstrate the technical skill, motivation, independence, and creativity necessary to complete difficult security tasks. The Officer prepares security plans that take into account all pertinent regulations and establishes security procedures for programs.

An important part of the Contractor Program Security Officer’s job is to monitor security programs and coordinate communications and network security requirements. This individual then advises team members on program or operational security risks, explains the security risks, and develops mitigation strategies and resolution options. The Contractor Program Security Officer is responsible for reviewing and writing evaluations of security proposals and plans and then coordinating all other documents and procedures prepared by others into a cohesive document.

General Educational Requirements

The position of Contractor Program Security Officer generally requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a cybersecurity-related discipline. Many employers prefer a Master’s Degree and may require up to eight years of experience and a Top Secret Security Clearance. Industry certifications are preferred by almost all employers and are required by many.

Additional Qualifications

In addition to a strong technical background, the Contractor Program Security Officer must have several years of managerial or supervisory experience. He/she must be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills and must have strong audit skills. Written reports and oral presentations of the results of surveys and inspections are an integral part of this position so strong written and verbal communication skills are required as are excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
