A recent report cited the global bill for cybercrime as $575 billion annually; the United States’ share of this is $100 billion. Given this level of economic impact, cyber security has become the primary focus for the protection of assets within the word’s critical infrastructure. professionals now see cyber security as an integral part of initiatives related to regulations, standards, and policies that govern asset protection.

The role of the Asset Protection Security Control Center Officer is to set security standard requirements for the asset protection security control center that will maintain system and network security, data integrity, and confidentiality.  Security standards define the processes, procedures, and practices necessary for implementing an asset protection IT security program.

Protecting assets is primarily a risk management issue. The Asset Protection Security Control Center Officer will use his experience in asset protection and risk management to mitigate cyber security risks in a manner that will:

  • Ensure that secure interactions take place within a shared and trusted environment.
  • Ensure that secure interactions use a common authentication process, security architecture and point of entry.
  • Close unauthorized pathways into the enterprise’s networks and data.
  • Oversee compliance with IT security standards that ensure asset protection.
  • Prevent misuse of, damage to, or loss of hardware and software assets.
  • Ensure employee accountability for protection of IT assets.


General Educational Requirements

Although the minimum educational requirement for this position generally is a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, some employers may require only an Associates Degree while others may require a Masters Degree. Studies in Information Assurance and Cyber Security are highly preferred. Industry certifications generally are required and some employers may require security clearances.


Additional Qualifications

In addition to having an accomplished background in asset protection and risk management, an effective Asset Protection Security Control Center Officer will be intelligent and driven with solid interpersonal skills and a strong foundation of business knowledge. The Officer also will have strong written and verbal communication ability; the ability to collaborate and build consensus; strong leadership, negotiation, and persuasion ability; and the desire to maintain a high level of expertise in the field of cyber security.
