The Application Security Coordinator focuses on security and risk assessment for the enterprise’s application programs. This includes developing the security implementation strategy. The Coordinator must be familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures that apply to application security and that provide protection against threats, application vulnerabilities and zero-day attacks.

The Application Security Coordinator relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish a variety of tasks that include the following:

  • developing defenses, detection, and mitigation techniques
  • coordinating, developing and evaluating security programs
  • developing a user security support plan and training support staff
  • providing policies for access control, user authorization, user provisioning processing, auditing and event monitoring and reporting 
  • providing ongoing review and recommendation of system upgrades and all configuration and process changes 
  • providing ongoing review of audit and event logs pertaining to user access, administrative activities and contextual use of data

 

 

General Educational Requirements

The Application Security Coordinator position generally requires, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in a computer security-related subject. Some employers may allow a combination of education and professional experience. Industry-recognized, security-related certifications generally are required for this position.

 

 

Additional Qualifications

The Application Security Coordinator is expected to have broad technical knowledge and experience. In addition, the Coordinator should be a self-starter who is capable of handling a project through all part of its lifecycle. The Coordinator also must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and project management skills including the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical colleagues. Keeping up with government regulations and industry standards for information security is required for this position.
