August, 2016

On August 24th, Sony PlayStation’s servers were attacked by a DDoS attack which caused a total shutdown of the systems for 36 hours. These servers are storing useful information for PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 players, and during the attack users could not have login and play online.

Prior to the attack, a user which identifies with the Islamic organization ISIS twitted that they have “planted the ISIS flag on Sony’s servers”.

In addition to the DDoS attack, another twit suggested that there is a bomb on the flight of Sony’s president. Due to the publication, the flight was forced landing for security checks.

An investigation held by the security agencies in the US revealed that the users who twitted these two messages are already known for taking part in past cyber attacks. Both users – “Lizard Squad” and “Famed God” – participated in the attack on Sony in 2011 and the attack against Microsoft Xbox on 2013. As for the bomb threat, the agencies have yet to publish details regarding the issue.

Sony from its part, announced that they have not found any evidence for other cyber attacks except for the DDoS. The company stated that no information was stolen and promised to update their users regarding new developments.

As can be learned from Sony incidents, the global terror is spreading into new areas and exploits also the cyberspace for attacking governments and organizations. As time passes, the attacks are getting bigger, more hackers are taking part in the attacks and their techniques are becoming more sophisticated. The next massive attack is just around the corner.
