Spyware refers to a software that spy on your Internet browsing activities, record keystrokes, and collect almost any type of data including your personal information such as credit/debit card or banking details, login IDs and passwords. Here are seven tips to avoid a spyware attack and keep your data safe.

#1. Disable the autorun feature

If you’ve ever plugged in a USB device into your computer and had a window pop up giving you options to view folders or files, then you know what your system’s autorun feature is enabled. This feature is one of the common ways malware such as Trojan, worm, spyware, etc., get automatically installed on your system.

#2. Be wary of free adware

Free software of any kind can be found all over the internet. Most of them can be useful, however most of the time you can never know if they contain malicious applications until it is too late. Even the most innocent looking software can be packed with spyware. Always do your research on the source before trusting it to make changes on your computer.

#3. Beware of pop-up ads

Popup ads have become a regular part of everyday browsing. The smart thing to do is ignore these ads and never respond to them in any way. Even if they display “Cancel” or “Close” buttons, do not click it as they can be traps. Right click on the border of the window at the top and select “Close.”

#4. Never download attachments in emails from unknown senders

Always exercise caution before clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown senders. In certain cases, you may also receive emails from someone that can seem trustworthy (i.e., your bank, friends, or trusted online store), however even in such exercise precaution. Even if you should access the link, first verify its URL and manually type it in your Internet browser.

#5. Get Browser Sandbox protection

Browser sandbox protection puts your Internet browser into a virtual environment. Any file that you download or gets downloaded from this browser remains isolated in this environment and is blocked from causing any damage to the real computer.

#6. Turn ON popup blocker

One easy way to block popup ads is to utilize the popup blocker in your browser or to download a reliable one as an extension to your browser. However, it should be noted that some websites may require popups for certain functions, but you may choose to turn OFF this feature for your trusted websites.

#7. Use a multilayered antivirus solution

Overtime attackers have learned to make their malware more inconspicuous, adaptable, resilient and more damaging. A common antivirus cannot protect you from all such threats at the same time. That is why it is important to use an antivirus that can not only take down spyware but all kinds of malware – known and unknown. It must also be equipped with sandbox protection as discussed earlier, and a keen web protection feature that can block fraud and infected websites.
