Question: Where do 70% of successful breaches begin?

Answer: The endpoint.

The State of Endpoint Security

Traditional defensive security solutions are fighting a losing battle against hackers and malware.  With each day, new attacks and viruses appear and keeping systems safe is like bailing out a boat without first plugging the holes—no matter how many buckets are scooped out, more will always be seeping in at your feet.

However, there is hope.  Cloud-based endpoint security is smarter, more effective, and more reliable than traditional AV.  Unlike other approaches, cloud-based security delivers a single solution—focusing not just on response, but also on prevention and detection.  This blog is the first in a series that will examine the top 10 Endpoint Security Problems Solved by the Cloud.

But before we delve into the solution, let’s take a moment to examine the problem.  What’s wrong with tradition AV? Why are these solutions failing so terribly?

Too Complex and Costly

Due to the limitations of traditional AV software, most organizations run a variety of tools on their endpoints in order to protect them.  Each one of these tools has its own agent, backend console, policies, configurations and costs. On top of this, none of these systems truly work well together—even when they’re delivered by the same company.

AV Can’t Keep Up

The more complex the environment, the harder it is to maintain, and the more resources it drains.  This makes it near impossible to keep every product current and leaves gaps and vulnerabilities that allow attackers in the door.  Last year alone there was a 30x increase in ransomware attacks and a 40% increase in breaches. Most organizations still rely solely on a reactive operational model, leaving them unable to defend their environment properly.

Humans Can Only Do So Much

Recent data shows that 67% of cybersecurity professionals say that they are too busy with their day-to-day work to keep up with basic training.  This means that these people are so busy managing security tools and putting out fires from the malware that gets through, that they don’t have time to understand how attacks are evolving and what they should be doing in response to that.  Attackers are moving faster and getting smarter. Defenders must keep pace with them, or risk leaving their environments vulnerable to attack.

The Cloud Is Your Only Choice

As mentioned earlier, the cloud offers protection that is smarter, faster, and more effective than traditional solutions.  It’s no wonder that 87% of organizations report some of their SOC functions are handled in the cloud, or plan to move them there in the next 24 months.

7 Experts on Moving to a Cloud-Based Endpoint Security Platform
Everyday companies put more of their assets in digital form. Healthcare records, retail purchases and personnel files are just some of the many examples of how our entire lives have moved online. While this makes our interconnected lives more convenient, it also makes them more vulnerable to attack. The monetary benefits of exploiting these vulnerabilities have created an extremely profitable underground economy; one that mimics the same one we all participate in and has led to an increase in the sophistication and frequency of attacks. At the same time, mobility and cloud are changing the security landscape. We’ve moved from a centralized to a decentralized model as end users increasingly work on-the-go and access critical business applications and resources from anywhere. As such there is more emphasis on the endpoint and individual identities - from both the defender and the attacker - than ever before. As endpoints become smarter, new challenges emerge: emerging ransomware and 0-day exploits infect all kinds of systems with ease, while many attackers use no malware at all to accomplish their malicious goals. With all this change, we spoke to 7 leading security experts to identify what’s working and how they’ve influenced their organization to make the necessary changes before becoming the next victim.
