The Use Local SPAN to Troubleshoot and Resolve Problems module provides you with the instructions and Cisco hardware to develop your hands on skills in configuring and using Switched Port Analyzer on a Cisco IOS switch. This module includes exercises that will cover the following topics:
- Configure SPAN on a switch
- Modify the SPAN configuration
- Verify that SPAN is working correctly
Exercise 1 - Configuring SPAN
The Switched Port Analyzer or SPAN feature allows you to analyze network traffic passing through specific ports on a switch. This is done by sending a copy of the traffic to another port on the switch that has been connected to a device that can analyze that traffic. In essence, SPAN mirrors received and sent traffic on one or more source ports to a destination port for analysis. Devices that can be used to analyze such traffic include specialized equipment such as a Switch Probe.
In this exercise, you will configure SPAN on the NYACCESS1 switch to analyze traffic on the FastEthernet 0/24 interface from the FastEthernet 0/1 interface using Wireshark on the PLABCSCO01 server.
Exercise 2 - Examining and Modifying the SPAN Configuration
If this was a production network, you would generate traffic on the FastEthernet 0/24 interface of the NYACCESS1 switch, and you would monitor the duplicated traffic that will be transmitted over the FastEthernet 0/1 interface on which SPAN has been configured.
In this exercise, you will examine and verify the SPAN configuration on the NYACCESS1 switch.
