The Understand Server Installation Options module provides you with the instruction and server hardware to develop your hands on skills in the defined topics. This module includes the following exercises:
- Server Core Installation
- Configuring Windows Deployment Services
- Creating an Answer File for Unattended Installation
Exercise 1 - Server Core Installation
In this exercise, you will learn the following in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2:
- Installing Server Core
- Install Windows Deployment Services role for deploying Windows Server 2008
- Perform an unattended full installation
Exercise 2 - Configuring Windows Deployment Services
You can use the Windows Deployment Services technology for network-based installation of Windows Server 2008 R2. In other words, using WDS you can remotely deploy Windows Server 2008. Both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 includes WDS as a Server Role. WDS uses disk imaging, in which a storage device is created by copying the source medium sector-by-sector thereby perfectly representing the contents of a storage device.
In this example, you will perform the task of adding Windows Deployment Services role for deploying Windows Server 2008.
Exercise 3 - Creating an Answer File for Unattended Installation
After installing the WDS, you can perform unattended installations on multiple computers in the network. Unattended installation essentially means that you do not need to physically go to each computer and install Windows. Instead, you can initiate the installation from within WDS installed on a computer, and Windows will be installed on the selected computers. You can monitor and manage the installations from a single location.
In this task, you will learn how to create an answer file and associate it with the installation files through the WDS.
