The Understand Remote Access module provides you with the instruction and Server hardware to develop your hands on skills. This module includes the following exercises:
- Install VPN Server
- Configure VPN Server Properties
- Using PPTP
- Configure Remote Assistance
- Install Remote Server Administration Tools
Exercise 1 - Install VPN Server
Windows Server 2008 R2 includes a network service called Routing and Remote Access Services (RRAS) that supports remote user or site-to-site connectivity by using virtual private networks (VPN) or dial-up connections.
In this exercise, you will install RRAS on a Windows Server 2008 R2 device and configure another Windows Server 2008 R2 as a VPN client that will dial-in to RRAS.
Exercise 2 - Configure VPN Server Properties
After installing Routing and Remote Access feature in Windows and preparing the network interface for VPN service, you will now configure its system settings.
In this exercise, you will configure the system settings of Routing Remote Access Server by setting up the VPN ports, allowing firewall ports to accept incoming connections. You will next give permission to a domain user to dial-in to the server using Active Directory Users and Computers.
Exercise 3 - Using PPTP
Point to Point Tunnelling Protocol (PPTP) is a VPN protocol that requires a username and a password to authenticate user accounts that dial-in to a VPN server. This protocol is widely supported by a variety of vendors because of its simplicity and ease of implementation. PPTP can be a security risk however if the user name and password are compromised for a number of reasons.
In this exercise, you will set up a Windows Server 2008 R2 to dial-in to the VPN server.
Exercise 4 - Configure Remote Assistance
Remote assistance allows a user to seek help from the administrator when it comes to common problems in using a computer.
Exercise 5 - Install Remote Server Administration Tools
Microsoft Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) enables IT administrators to remotely manage roles and features in Windows Server 2008 R2 from another computer. It includes support for remote management of computers that are running either a Server Core installation option or a full installation option of Windows Server 2008 R2.
