With the use of certificates (keys) either self-signed or issued by a Certification Authority (CA), a user can sign a with a digital signature to prove that he is the author of the e-mail message, then use encryption to protect the message from being read by unintended recipients.
S/MIME provides cryptographic security services namely authentication, message integrity and non-repudiation of message origin.
