The Performing Initial Device configuration module provides you with the instructions and Cisco hardware to develop your hands on skills in the basic setup of Cisco switches and routers. This module includes exercise that will cover the following topics:
- Reviewing physical and configuration characteristics of a switch
- Initial switch configuration
- Configuring remote access
- Reviewing physical and configuration characteristics of a router
- Initial router configuration
- Basic router interface configuration
Exercise 1 - Essential Switch Configuration
In this exercise, you will configure some essential settings on a Cisco switch. When a switch has been turned on for the first time, or when the configuration has been erased, the initial configuration dialog is displayed. Instead of using the initial configuration dialog, you will use the command line interface, or CLI, to configure the settings detailed in this module. It is uncommon that the initial configuration dialog is used in the real world, and as almost all of your Cisco configurations will be done using the CLI, experience using the CLI is vital.
Exercise 2 - Configuring Remote Access to a Switch
So far, all configuration activity has been implemented from the console of the device. This means that you are directly connected to the device with a serial cable on the console port. In most production environments, network equipment of a single network can be situated on different floors of a building, in different buildings or even in different cities. It would not be efficient to require your physical presence to configure each network device every time a change is necessary. This is why remote access to network devices must be configured, so you can access all your devices from the comfort of your office.
In this exercise, you will configure remote access to NYACCESS1 such that via the network itself you will be able to obtain command line connectivity using protocols such as Telnet and SSH.
Exercise 3 - Essential Router Configuration
In this exercise, you will learn how to configure some essential settings on a Cisco router. You will very quickly notice that many of the tasks in this exercise are almost identical to those performed in the first two exercises. This is because many of the base configurations for both switches and routers are quite similar, if not the same.
