Exercise 1 - Configure and Run Windows Update

With the ever-increasing number of security threats and vulnerabilities in software products, network administrators must be one-step ahead in fighting off these loopholes in their computer systems. Windows Update service is enabled by default. Assuming the computer has a reliable Internet connection, important updates to secure the operating system, add new features to Windows are managed efficiently without user intervention.

Beginning with Windows 10, Microsoft has updated the way it publishes updates for the operating system. It is known by another term called “Servicing Model” formerly called as Windows Branching.

The Semi-Annual channel is a twice-a-year feature update that releases around March and September with an 18-month servicing period for each release. For example, PLABWIN10 device (using the Semi-Annual Channel - Targeted, servicing option) in this lab, its version is 1709 (2-digit year, 2-digit month - YYMM) build 16299.492. When PLABWIN10 gets updated, its next version will be version 1803 (YYMM) build 17134.228.

The Semi-Annual Channel supersedes the Current Branch (CB) and the Current Branch for Business (CBB) concepts starting with Windows 10, version 1703—the version that released for deployment on July 2017.

Earlier versions of Windows 10, such as version 1607 with Servicing option of Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) that became available in August 2016 does not receive feature upgrade.

In this exercise, you will configure some of the common properties of Windows Update. You will likewise run them manually and examine the parameters on how the installation of updates can be automated in Windows.
