Overview

Introduction

Welcome to the Install and Configure SNMP Practice Lab. In this module, you will be provided with the instructions and devices needed to develop your hands-on skills.

Learning Outcomes

In this module, you will complete the following exercises:

  • Exercise 1 - Installing the Monitoring Software
  • Exercise 2 - Installing and Configuring SNMP
  • Exercise 3 - Performing a Network Inventory

After completing this lab, you will be able to:

  • Install the Monitoring Software
  • Install and Configuring SNMP
  • Use the Monitoring Software to Perform a Network Inventory

Exam Objectives

The following exam objectives are covered in this lab:

  • N10-007 1.1: Explain the purposes and uses of ports and protocols (Protocols and ports, SNMP 161)
  • N10-007 3.1: Given a scenario, use appropriate documentation and diagrams to manage the network (Inventory management)
  • N10-007 3.3: Explain common scanning, monitoring, and patching processes and summarize their expected outputs (SNMP monitors, MIB)

Lab Duration

It will take approximately 1 hour to complete this lab.

Exercise 1 - Installing the Monitoring Software

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a network protocol for managing devices on a TCP/IP network. Devices that support SNMP include servers, workstations, routers, switches, printers and much more. SNMP is often used in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that call for administrative attention-for example the administrator can be alerted if the router fails or be alerted when disk space on a server is running out.

SNMP-managed devices also referred to as “agents” that listen on UDP port 161 for SNMP requests. Responses to these requests are then forwarded to an SNMP management station that runs proprietary software for interpreting the data received from agents.

In this series of exercises, you will install a network monitoring program (The Dude) and use it to query an SNMP service that you will install and configure on your server.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this exercise, you will be able to:

  • Install the Monitoring Software (The Dude-Server)

Exercise 2 - Installing and Configuring SNMP

When The Dude application is installed on the PLABWIN10 device, complete the following steps on the PLABDC01 device to install and configure an SNMP agent.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this exercise, you will be able to:

  • Install and Configuring SNMP

Exercise 3 - Performing a Network Inventory

In this exercise, you will use The Dude to perform a network inventory.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this exercise, you will be able to:

  • Use the Monitoring Software to Perform a Network Inventory
