Overview

Introduction

The Implementing Virtual Hard Disk Boot and Windows PE module provides you with the instructions and devices to develop your hands-on skills. This module includes the following exercises:

  • Adding a Virtual Hard Disk to the Boot Menu
  • Creating a Windows PE ISO Image to Boot a Guest Virtual Machine

Exam Objectives

The following objectives are covered in this lab.

  • Demonstrate how to add a virtual hard disk to the boot menu
  • Demonstrate how to install a Windows PE ISO image to boot a guest virtual machine with the Windows PE

Lab Duration

It will take approximately 60 minutes to complete this lab.

Exercise 1 - Adding a Virtual Hard Disk to the Boot Menu

Windows 10 supports the installation of new operating systems with the boot capabilities using Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs). Using the native boot capabilities, you can use the provisioned VHDs to install a new Windows OS without repartitioning the drive and therefore preventing conflicts with an existing Windows installation. When correctly configured, the native-boot VHD allows you to run a new instance of Windows and provides the option to boot to another operating system.

In this exercise, you will work with PLABWIN101 a guest virtual machine on PLABHYPV01. You will first mount the Windows 8.1 setup file (available in drive F: of PLABHYPV01) on PLABWIN101 virtual machine. You will then apply the Windows 8.1 ISO image mounted on PLABWIN101 to a VHD. You will then add the VHD as a boot entry to the PLABWIN101 device to facilitate dual-boot Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 OS versions.

Exercise 2 - Creating a Windows PE ISO Image to Boot a Guest Virtual Machine

Microsoft provides you with the Windows Pre-installation Environment (Windows PE), which is a mini operating system used for booting up a bare metal computer and used for connecting to a network share. Using the Windows PE files, you can prepare a Windows installation and deployment.

In this exercise, you will learn to install Windows PE to a media on PLABWIN101 guest virtual machine on PLABHYPV01. You will then boot the PLABWIN101 virtual machine to Windows PE.
