The Configuring Windows XP Mode and AppLocker module provides you with the instruction and computer hardware to develop your hands on skills. This module includes the following exercises:
- Application Compatibility using Windows XP Mode
- Configuring Application Restrictions
- Configuring Application Restrictions in Internet Explorer
Exercise 1 - Application Compatibility using Windows XP Mode
Using Windows XP Mode, you can run old applications that were designed for Windows XP on computers running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate Editions.
Windows XP Mode works in two ways—both as a virtual operating system and as a way to open programs within Windows 7. It runs in a separate window on the Windows 7 desktop, much like a program, except it's a fully-functional, fully-licensed version of Windows XP. You can access your physical computer's CD/DVD drive, install programs, save files, and perform other tasks as if you were using a computer running Windows XP.
When using Windows XP Mode, the legacy application is installed in the Windows XP virtual machine. Then a program shortcut is created in Windows 7 where you run the old application.
Exercise 2 - Configuring Application Restrictions
In this exercise, you will apply application restrictions to unauthorised programs using AppLocker.
Applocker rules are enforceable only in Windows 7 Enterprise and higher versions. What you will perform in this exercise is configure the properties of Applocker, as the Windows 7 devices in this lab is running the Professional version.
Exercise 3 - Configuring Application Restrictions in Internet Explorer
In this exercise, you will look at some of the options in Internet Explorer to help you block and allow sites for security reasons.
