The Designing a SQL Server Instance and a Database Solution module provides you with the instruction and server hardware to develop your hands on skills in the defined topics. This module includes the following exercises:
- Designing for CPU Memory and Storage Capacity Requirements
- Designing SQL Server Instances
- Designing a Physical Database and Placing Objects
- Upgrading SQL Server Instances
Exercise 1 - Designing for CPU memory and storage capacity requirements
In this exercise, you will perform the tasks required for the planning of installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Before installing SQL Server some of the user requirements must be considered, like size of the tables, or whether to implement data compression or not.
Exercise 2 - Designing SQL Server Instances
In this exercise you will learn to design SQL Server Instances. This exercise includes instance configuration, surface area configuration, CPU affinity, memory allocation, max degree of parallelism (MAXDOP) and collation.
Exercise 3 - Designing a physical database and placing objects
In this exercise, you will understand about various database objects and their handling like heap and index placement, filestream, data and log files, filegroups, partition placement, large object placement and full text catalog. To gain an understanding of the command-line tools, please refer to your course material or visit http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms161956.aspx [Microsoft TechNet].
Exercise 4 - Upgrading SQL Server Instances
In this exercise, you will perform the tasks required to migrate or upgrade SQL Server Instance. This exercise includes multi-instance considerations, SQL Server version upgrade, instance and database collation, server-level and instance-level objects, service pack application.
