Exercise 1 - Working with MailTips and Message Classifications

Exchange Server provides a service known as MailTips that provides valuable information to the email senders while composing the message. For example, if you have set certain conditions or restrictions for specific recipients and the sender needs to be notified of those conditions, then MailTips can be implemented. MailTips notifies the sender about such restrictions before sending the email. This will help the sender to decide the future course of action regarding the official emails.

There are built-in MailTips available in Exchange Server. You can also create customized MailTips. The following MailTips are displayed in the sender’s mailbox under specific scenarios:

  • Restricted Recipient MailTip - This MailTip is displayed if the sender tries to send an email to a prohibited recipient. The email will not be delivered to the recipient’s mailbox even if it is sent.
  • Automatic Replies MailTip - This MailTip is displayed if the recipient has configured an automatic reply for the emails.
  • Large Audience MailTip - This MailTip is displayed if the sender tries to send an email to a distribution group having members exceeding the limit of the large audience threshold.
  • Moderated Recipient MailTip -This MailTip is displayed if the sender tries to send an email to a recipient who is a distribution group moderator.
  • Invalid Internal Recipient MailTip - This MailTip is displayed if the sender tries to send an email to a mailbox that does not exist in the organization.
  • Reply-All on Bcc MailTip - This MailTip is displayed if the sender chooses to reply to all the said recipients in an email where the sender was kept in the Bcc. This will notify all the said recipients the fact that the sender was part of the communication but in a hidden manner.

A message classification is another type of service available in Exchange Server. You can specify the purpose of the email to the sender with the help of message classification. The message classification needs to be deployed on the email client device after it is created.

In this exercise, you will learn how to work with MailTips and message classifications by performing the following tasks:

  • Task 1 - Configure restrictions
  • Task 2 - View the MailTips and the restriction effects
