Configure and Verify Basic HSRP
The "Configure and Verify Basic HSRP" module provides you with the instructions and Cisco hardware to develop your hands on skills in configuring Hot Standby Router Protocol. This module includes the following exercises: Configuring HSRP, Manipulating HSRP and its parameters, Observing HSRP in action.
The Configure and Verify Basic HSRP module provides you with the instructions and Cisco hardware to develop your hands on skills in configuring Hot Standby Router Protocol. This module includes the following exercises:
- Configuring HSRP
- Manipulating HSRP and its parameters
- Observing HSRP in action
Exercise 1 - Configuring HSRP
HSRP allows two or more routers to provide backup for each other in the event of a failure. The benefits of HSRP is that if one router goes down, devices on the network will be able to access the default gateway without having to change any of their configurations.
In this exercise, you will configure NYCORE1 and NYCORE2 to function as an HSRP group where one device will function as the backup of the other.
Exercise 2 - Configuring Priority and Pre-emption
As you have seen so far, there is no mechanism in place to define which of the two devices becomes the active router. Whichever device is active remains so until it goes down.
With the priority and pre-emption functionality, it is possible to force HSRP to choose specific devices as the active and standby routers when functioning normally.
In this exercise, you will implement the priority and pre-emption functionality on the NYCORE1 and NYCORE2 devices.
Exercise 3 - Examining HSRP in Action
In this exercise, you will examine HSRP as it functions in real time and you will get a feel for how quickly the network is restored if there is a failure in one of the default gateways.
