The Configure and Administer vSphere Availability Solutions module provides you with the instruction and server hardware to develop your hands on skills in the defined topics. This module includes the following exercises:
- Configure Advanced vSphere High Availability (HA) Features
- Configure Advanced vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) Features
Exercise 1 - Configure Advanced vSphere HA Features
The HA advanced settings are always applied at the cluster level. It is important to note that in most of the vSphere environments that you configure, the vSphere HA Advanced Options will not require any change and you will continue to work with the default options. In this exercise, you will configure the advanced HA settings on the PLAB cluster created on PracticeLabs environment.
Exercise 2 - Manage Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) Affinity Rules
When DRS is configured on a vSphere cluster, the affinity rule of the DRS configuration enables you to manage the placement of virtual machines within the cluster. The affinity rules are of two types:
- VM-Host Affinity: You can use this type of rule to define affinity or anti-affinity between virtual machines and hosts. An affinity rule specifies that the selected virtual machine of a DRS group can or must run on a specific host of a DRS group. An anti-affinity rule, on the other hand, specifies that the selected virtual machine of a DRS group cannot run on the specific host of a DRS group.
- VM-VM Affinity: You can use this type of rule to define affinity or anti-affinity between individual virtual machines. Affinity on this rule allows DRS to keep the specified virtual machines together on the same host. With an anti-affinity rule, DRS keeps the specified virtual machines separated on different hosts
To apply the VM-Host Affinity or VM-VM Affinity rules, you need the groups to apply the rules, then you define the rules, and then apply them. This task involves three stages - creating hosts DRS groups, creating VM DRS groups, and creating and applying affinity rules. Accordingly, the task is divided into three sub-tasks:
