Exercise 1 - Understand Active Directory Permissions

Network operating systems like Windows Server, store information about servers, workstations, disk volumes, printers, users, groups and client-server applications in a database commonly known as a directory. Software vendors implement their proprietary tools to administer, secure and manage those objects in a directory and it is called a directory service.

Active Directory is a network service that provides a centralized repository for storing, managing information and organize their resources. Data stored on a directory service can only be accessed by designated administrators and authorized personnel.

In this lab, an Active Directory domain called PRACTICELABS.COM has been pre-created with a number of organizational units that contain users and security groups. You will learn how to delegate the administration of an organizational unit to a trusted security group.

Exercise 2- Managing Permissions to Windows Registry

The Windows registry is a hierarchical database that store configuration settings such as application data, user settings and information on installed hardware devices. The information contained in the registry is continually accessed by Windows during operation like when a user signs-in to a computer and load the user profile. For example, when an application is launched it consults the registry to determine the type of files that can be created. Moreover, when a file needs to be printed such as a document, the registry is looked up to determine what print device is installed and what printer port can be used to process the print request.

To manage the Windows registry, you can launch Registry Editor by running regedit.exe. It is essential that some precaution is taken to ensure that unintentional modifications are not introduced into the registry as this may cause instability or make the operating system unusable.

In this task, you will modify permissions to a registry key to grant a user remote access to the Windows registry.
