Configuring DHCP Relay
This IT Pro Challenge helps learners understand how to use Windows Server Manager to install DHCP, how to configure a DHCP client and add a scope, and how to verify that the DHCP client received a leased address.
In this IT Pro Challenge, learners will understand how to use the DHCP network management protocol. Learners will use PowerShell to view the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway of a host. They will learn how to use Windows Server Manager to install the DHCP role and then configure the DHCP server. They will also learn how to relay DHCP requests from a router to the DHCP server and verify that the DHCP client received a leased address. The skills learners acquire in this virtual lab are helpful for roles as a network or system administrator.
The scenario for this lab is that you are a network administrator who needs to configure a DHCP relay agent on a network with two subnets connected by a router. To accomplish this, you first need to use the Server Manager to install the DHCP role. Then you will configure a DHCP client and add a scope. Lastly, you need to verify that the DHCP client received a leased address.
For the lab, you have access to four virtual machines: Router, DC1, DC2, and SVR1. There are two subnets connected by a router.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network management protocol that allows a server to dynamically assign IP addresses to each device on a network, allowing them to communicate with other IP networks. When you use DHCP to manage IP addresses, the devices on the network do not “own” their IP address; instead, they “lease” the IP address from the DHCP server for a defined period.
Server Manager is a Windows Server component that allows you to manage Windows servers remotely without enabling Remote Desktop.
Configure a DHCP server
Because DHCP servers dynamically assign IP addresses, it has a couple of benefits for network administrators. First, it reduces human error or address conflicts by removing the need to configure IP addresses manually, and this results in reduced network administration.
To begin, you will sign into the DC2 virtual machine, launch PowerShell, and run the ipconfig /all command to identify the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway on a host. Then you will use the Server Manager to install the DHCP role on the DC2 virtual machine and create a scope for the subnet.
Configure a DHCP relay agent
A DHCP relay agent is a host that forwards requests/replies between a DHCP server on one network and a client on a different network. When a DHCP relay agent receives a message from a DHCP server, the relay agent generates a new DHCP message that it then sends on a different interface.
On the Router virtual machine, you will use the Server Manager to configure the router to relay DHCP requests from the subnet to the DHCP server running on a virtual machine (DC2). Then you will switch to the SVR1 virtual machine and configure it to be a DHCP client. You need to ensure that SVR1 received a leased address from DC2 and that SVR1 can ping DC2. Finally, on the DC2 virtual machine, you need to confirm that the DHCP console displays lease information for SVR1.
By taking this virtual lab, you will learn how to install a DHCP server, create a scope, configure a router to act as a DHCP relay agent, and verify an IP address lease assignment.
