Overview

Subnets provide a network administrator with a powerful tool for managing traffic on their networks. Moreover, a DHCP server can be used to manage subnets by assigning IP addresses on a subnet. The ability to work with subnets and DHCP servers is a crucial skill for a network administrator. Combined, subnets with DHCP provide many network benefits, including:

  • Enhanced network performance and speed.
  • Reduced network congestion.
  • Enhanced network security.
  • Controlled network growth.
  • Easier administration.

This hands-on lab will give you real-world experience working with subnets within a local network. You will create and manage subnets, manage traffic between subnets, and set up a DHCP server.

Understand the scenario: You are a network administrator. You need to troubleshoot network connectivity and configure a DHCP relay agent in a network that contains three subnets connected by a router.

Understand the environment: You have three subnets that are connected by a router.

Troubleshoot and resolve IP connectivity issues:

The first step of this lab is to verify your network. You will need to ensure each subnet on your network is connected. You will log into each subnet virtual machine (VM), examine the IP address configuration, and make sure each VM can communicate with every other VM. For this step, you will learn several Windows PowerShell cmdlets.

Modify the egress filter:

You will next gain more hands-on experience working with subnets by setting up a filter on one subnet. You will filter traffic from this subnet to include only HTTP traffic. You will perform this step by logging directly into the router and managing the firewall settings using the Windows PowerShell.

Configure a DHCP server:

Next, you will gain experience configuring a DHCP server. You will install DHCP roles on one subnet and manage IP addresses within this subnet via DHCP.

Configure a DHCP relay agent:

Finally, you will work with the DHCP to gain an understanding of how a DHCP server can be used to relay IP addresses. You will configure DHCP requests on the router and have these requests relayed to the DHCP server you installed in the previous step. You will perform several verifications to ensure your DHCP server and relaying are working correctly.

Summary:

Any large network will require multiple subnets and DHCP servers to operate efficiently. Maintaining these subnets and servers will be a large part of any career in network administration. Though time-consuming, properly developed and maintained subnets are necessary to optimize a network for both speed, efficiency, and ease of use. Furthermore, the ability to add intra-subnet filters boosts the security of the overall network with minimal effort. The skills you gain in this lab will provide you with the foundation you need to approach real-world problems in network management.

  • Verify IPv4 connectivity, routing, and DNS resolution for a network with three subnets.
  • Modify filters on the router to limit certain types of network traffic.
  • Install a DHCP server.
