There are many pros and cons for an organization to utilize online training in a cloud-centered space. Cloud-based technology is becoming a must in the majority of modern organizations. This technology is also highly useful when providing online training for employees who want to use the convenience of cloud-based learning programs to increase their skill sets.

Statistics show that 34% of employees today have used computer-based online training programs in the workplace. This statistics will continue to increase as organizations become even more familiar with online training platforms for employee skill development.

Pros of Online Training

The pros of online training are almost too many to list. These remote online training sessions are cost-effective, offer an interactive learning space despite employee location, and embody the convenience of mobile technology. According to a 2013 report by The Association of Talent Developments, training per employee1 costs an average of $1,208, which is spent by organizations on employee training each year. That being said, in-person training has many components that make up this total cost. The cost of training is broken down to include the following:

  • 63% – Internal services such as training department staff salaries, travel costs, etc.
  • 27% – External services such as consultants, workshops, content development, licensing, etc.
  • 10% – Costs associated with tuition reimbursement for continuing education of employees.3

Start FREE Intro to IT and Cybersecurity Course >>  Online training options significantly reduce internal services, which make up the bulk of expenses for training programs in the workplace. With these overhead costs in check, there is revenue leftover in the budget to acquire high-quality training programs for the employees. New training programs will keep employees up-to-date on the latest technology and industry trends while allowing team members to see and converse with remote team members. In that case, working with online platforms benefits all parties involved in an organization, and is a viable way to bring in new training courses.

According to a 2014 MIT study, online learning2 and distance learning programs offered many benefits to employees who took online courses. The MIT study noted that students taking online training we’re able to score better on testing than if they were in a traditional classroom environment. The study showed that there were definite advantages to online training because students who learned with online platforms appeared to make significant knowledge gains.

    Cons of Online Training

There are also cons to the use of online and distance learning courses when used by workers at an organization. Although these systems are generally easy to use and navigate, some learners still prefer the personal experience of meeting face-to-face in the traditional classroom setting. These learners can be a bit uncomfortable using online and cloud-based training tools. However, the cloud-based training platforms often offer tutorials on using the system, tips on mastering the navigation of the web platform, and even access to a Customer Success Manager like with Cybrary. It is critical for organizations to meet the learning needs of the team and manage costs at the same time. Finding the right training program is no easy task with the vast amount of online learning resources for practically every industry.

The advantages will outweigh the cons in almost all cases in regards to online vs. traditional in-house training. Online training courses are continually being redesigned to offer a simpler and more convenient option to learning. It is viable and affordable option for busy workers at organizations worldwide.
