The Q & A

Tell us about yourself:

"I am System Administrator with over a decade of experience in administration and engineering. I have worked across various industries including government, non-profit, and Fortune 500 companies. I started out as a general system administrator primarily working with Microsoft technologies like Windows Server, Active Directory, System Center Configuration Manager, and SQL as well as VMware and mobile device management. I got started with programming and scripting working with VBScript and moved to Powershell later. After a few years of working with a variety of technologies, I decided to focus on a few technologies and ended up working as an Exchange and Lync/Skype for Business administrator. Diving into these narrowed topics eventually led to me working as a consultant for these technologies at a Microsoft partner. Since then I have worked more with Office 365 and other collaboration technologies like Microsoft Teams. I am currently working on building out more knowledge on cloud technologies like Azure and branching out into more DevOps-like topics including infrastructure as code and automation."

What brought you to teaching on Cybrary:

"I had been looking around at different opportunities to build content and give back to the IT community as so many others have done for me. I saw a job posting online looking for PowerShell instructors at Cybrary. I enjoy working with and building scripts and modules with PowerShell and was ready to pass on any knowledge I have to others just now learning. I had never heard of Cybrary prior to that, but I started researching the company and like the focus, they have on cybersecurity training. I thought it was great that many of their courses are free as well. I applied and started working with the team to learn more about how they operate and to complete an audition video. Once completed, they instead asked if I would be interested in putting together an entire course covering the AZ-300 exam. Eight hours of content! I decided to go for it and the team has been great in providing feedback and working with me to build this great course for its students."

Tell us about your course:

"My course is covering one of the two exams needed to earn the Microsoft Azure Architect Expert certification. The AZ-300 focuses on the technologies in Azure that an architect needs to be familiar with including virtual machines, networking, identity, security, web apps, and databases. While the exam covers a wide breadth of topics, my goal for the course is to give people new to Azure and the certification an introduction to these technologies and act as a launching point to further their knowledge and skills. While many may see the word “architect” in the certification and think it is beyond their skillset, the certification gives a nice overview of many skills needed to work within Azure including infrastructure operations to developer topics. In the course, I tried to keep the slides to a minimum and really focus on working in the Azure portal building and deploying different resources to gives hands-on experience. Sometimes just reading about a topic doesn’t always make sense but building it in the portal forces you to review and to understand all the options available. Following along in the demos will also build your skills to take on the performance-based lab sections of the AZ-300. The exam will include access to an Azure portal to complete assigned tasks as part of the exam."

Education/Experience in Cyber Security:

"While cybersecurity has never been my full-time role, the topic is important to all aspects of information technology. I believe everyone working in IT, from helpdesk to administrators to developers, need to understand cybersecurity concepts and how to implement them in their everyday activities. This includes understanding and applies best practices like least-privilege access, managing administrator access, certificates, cipher suites, and securing data traffic on the network. Cybersecurity is not just a corporate topic either; consumers need to understand how to manage their own passwords and what information they provide to websites online. Things like multi-factor authentication and strong passwords are also applicable to them."
