#Anti-virus products… they have been around for as long as many of us have been alive. The first anti-virus program, “The Reaper” was designed to get rid of the first virus ‘The Creeper’ by Ray Tomlinson in 1971.

This week, we discuss the efficacy of anti-virus. Is it still needed? What should blue teamers be looking for to make their #anti-virus work for them.  And what options do you have if you don’t want to use anti-virus?

We also argue about whether it’s just a huge industry selling snake oil that is bolstered by #compliance #frameworks, like #PCI?

  1. Thanks for the podcast! It was an interesting hear, definitely a debate that will rage on for quite some time. 🙂

Keep up the good work (or talk)!

  2. In my experience, I do feel that the anti-virus programs we’ve come to know are outdated. In my short 10 years in the IT world I’ve worked with a few of the major AV programs and lately, they can’t seem to stop what’s really getting into people’s systems….malware.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come across an infected system, only to run the installed corporate-approved AV scan and have it find nothing. But then go back and run a malware scan with an available third-party malware removal program and have THAT eradicate the infection.

I wish Anti-virus software makers would get on the ball and have their scanners be all-inclusive as far as risk detection. Why separate thesee products? Oh yeah, the almighty dollar.

And don’t even get me started on why there are so many AV vendors in the first place……

    • Thanks for listening!

I would say that they give management a ‘security blanket’. For years, infosec said ‘update your antivirus, have firewalls, segment your networks’, and now we tell them that A/V is no good, it’s a billion dollar a year industry that is still trying to make itself worthy of mentioning to people.

For now, it remains a necessary evil for compliance, and for others, managed service security providers will begin to take the place of a/v… auditors just want to know you’re systems are protected… re-defining what “A/V” is may help it get better

  3. i can’t hear the podcast. doesn’t load and direct download link gets me a corrupt file error

    • both the embedded link and the direct link worked without modification.
