Hello, Cybrarians!

I’ve been asked many times which wireless signal frequency is better, 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

If you want a deeper understanding you can look it up online or visit quora.com which is my favorite site because it helps me a lot.

So, both are suitable for their work. Both are suitable frequency options, but which you use depends on your device, how many devices you have, location, and ISP. New devices can connect to both frequencies, however, beware of close spaces like apartment complexes or coffee shops. With too many devices overlapping on one channel, internet speeds will slow and connectivity will not be reliable.

Side note: Similarly, this is why before major events where areas know that thousands of people will be, cell service providers will send out technicians to make the place of that event have better coverage to accommodate the influx of people who will need data coverage.

First, I will tell you about the 2.4 GHz frequency. IEEE 802.11b operates on 2.4 GHz. Many of the wireless devices such as PDAs, wireless CCTV, etc use 2.4 GHz for its high range and low frequency. This makes it crowded. There are fewer channels in this frequency than other frequencies, which generates the problem of channel overlapping and reduces data throughput.

The IEEE 802.11a operates on 2.4 GHz, but 5 GHz operates on a higher frequency. It has more channels which reduce congestion and the overlapping problem. Since 5 GHz has a higher frequency, it gives you increased data throughput; however, it cannot penetrate objects like walls. So you need to be inside your home if you have the router inside.

That’s all I can explain. Thanks for reading this article.
