MS Outlook is the most popular email client for e-communication within organizations. The PST files are created automatically by Microsoft Outlook when users configure their profiles. MS Outlook uses Personal Storage Table (PST) files to store all your essential data, which include emails, contacts, journals, attachments, links, drafts, calendars, lists, appointments, etc. However, PST files are prone to errors, as they often get corrupted due to viruses and malicious attacks, abrupt shutdowns, file size issues, etc., which lead to PST file corruption.

The Primary Reason for Getting Outlook Error 0X800401d

On many occasions, MS Outlook users come across an error message saying, “An unknown error occurred, error code: 0X800401d,” which causes Outlook data to be inaccessible. The primary reason for getting Outlook error 0X800401d is the file size of the Outlook PST data while upgrading the current version of Outlook to the latest version. For example, when users want to upgrade their Outlook 2007 version to the Outlook 2010, 2013 or 2016 versions, they archive their Outlook PST data including emails, contacts, notes, drafts, links, lists, calendars, attachments, etc. in their Outlook profiles. And when they try to import the archived data to a newer version of Outlook, they encounter the error message below in MS Outlook:

“An unknown error occurred, error code: 0X800401d”

How to Fix Outlook Error 0X800401d

Getting such an error may put users in a very inconvenient situation, as it won’t let users access Outlook data (PST files in particular). However, there are several ways to fix this error. A few of them are discussed below.

Method 1: Reduce or Compact MS Outlook PST Files

In order to fix the above stated error, you need to reduce or compact your Outlook PST file by following these steps:

·         Launch MS Outlook.

·         Under the File tab, click on Data File Management.

·         Go to the Data Files tab, and choose the data file that you want to reduce or compact.

·         Once you have selected the particular PST file, choose the Settings option and click on the Compact Now button to compact the PST file size.

Method 2: Use ScanPST.exe to Repair PST Files

ScanPST.exe is a built-in utility owned by Microsoft. It is able to scan and repair a corrupt PST file thoroughly. To perform this method, you simply need to locate the ScanPST.exe utility and perform these steps:

·         Close the MS Outlook application.

·         Open ScanPST.exe to repair the PST file.

·         Browse or type the location of the PST file that you wish to repair, and click the Start button to start the repair process.

Note: Scanpst.exe can be effective only if the corruption is minor.

An Alternative to the Above Manual Methods

Both of the above mentioned methods are free to perform, but there is also a high chance of losing Outlook PST data, as a little mistake could lead to data loss. Hence, it is always recommended to choose a professional PST Recovery tool to perform a hassle-free task.

To fix Outlook error 0X800401d, you can perform either of the manual methods or opt for a professional solution. However, manual methods are very time consuming and complicated. Therefore, it is advised to opt for a professional solution.
