Last week Offensive Security presented the latest version of Kali Linux, Kali Rolling 2016.2.

So, I downloaded the iso file, installed it in my usb-drive, booted from the usb and made a new, clean installation of this Kali 2016.2. (There is always a bug that graphical install doesn’t find the installation cd. This can be fixed by removing and re-plugging the usb-installation media).

After login, I saw that the audio didn’t work properly. There was no sound AT ALL on my ThinkPad T420. So, I spent several days looking for a solution.

I tried to follow some tutorials, but they didn’t work at all.

The first on advised me to use alsa-utils to manage audio in kali; however, it didn’t work. There is also a video on YouTube that followed this similar tutorial, but it didn’t worked either (neither for me nor for him I suspect).

The second was a tutorial about reinstalling pulse audio but following the wrong commands, I deleted my entire home folder. (I made a clean install, so I didn’t really care, but stay away from this option).

Finally, last night I was able to find the solution and I want to share “my important discovery” with you.

Here is the solution to fix audio issues in Kali Rolling 2016.2

1) Open terminal;

2) Copy this command and press return:

systemctl –user enable pulseaudio && systemctl –user start pulseaudio

3) Reboot

After the system reboots, the audio on your computer will work properly.
Enjoy your new Kali dist.
