DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) in Windows Server Environment

  • It is a protocol used to provide IP addresses automatically to clients.
  • DHCP server uses port no. 67and DHCP client uses port no.68.
  • It is used in workgroup and domain as well.
  • DHCP is TCP based protocol.
  • Before DHCP BOOTP protocol was used for this task. But bootp does not have a facility of renewal.
  • By default, DHCP provides IP on lease for 8 days.
  • This lease duration can be increased upto 999 days.
  • Dhcp provides ip to clients randomly but it raises the Ip from its database sequencelly.
  • The client’s ip given by dhcp might be changed if client will be restarted.
  • After getting ip from dhcp server the client ip will not be changed if it is not restarted but it will be expired after 8 days.
  • If DHCP is in contact with client then client ip will never expired and client ip will be automatically renewed by dhcp.
  • If DHCP is not in contact with client then after 8 days when ip will be expired the APIPA protocol will provide the ip to client.

APIPA range is  to  ……

Requirements of DHCP

  1. Server operating system
  2. Static IP must be configured at DHCP.
  3. We configure scope of the self-range.

In domain:

  1. Server operating system
  2. Static ip must be configured at dhcp.
  3. We configure scope of the self-range
  4. Dc and dns must be properly configured.

It is the working area of DHCP.

Scope stores the configurations given by administrator. There are following contents in scope:-

  1. Address pool
  2. Address lease
  3. Reservation
  4. Scope option

Contents of scope

  1. Address pool
    • It stores the distribution range as well as stores the exclusion range.
  2. Address lease
    • It stores those ip addresses which are distributed to clients.
  3. Reservation
    • By the help of this option, we can reserve a particular ip to a particular client. This reserve ip will never be provided to other host.
  4. Scope Option
    • Each scope has its own scope option. Scope option is common for all clients. Scope option has the domain name and ip address of dns, wins server and default gateway.

DHCP Relay Agent

It is a protocol that relays the dhcp/bootp messeges from clients to servers in different-2 subnets. By the help of dhcp relay agent dhcp server can provide the ip of different-2 subnets to clients.

Requirements of DHCP relay agent

  1. One dhcp must be configured with scope of different-2 subnets.
  2. One router with dhcp relay agent.
  3. rras service on which is going to be router and dhcp relay agent.
    • (rras is available in network policy and access services role).
