How to Connect Router/Firewall On GNS3 VM to a Host Machine

How to connect a Router/Firewall that is running on GNS3 VM to a host machine. Have you ever wondered how to connect your simulated device (Router/Firewall) on GNS3 VM to host machine so that you can pull/push the configuration from/to the device?

Here is the solution:
1. You have to add one loopback adapter to your host machine then assign an IP Address to it.
2. The device has to be connected to cloud in gns3 and cloud should be bind to an adapter created on the host machine.
3. Creating a Loop back adapter on the Host machine as a standard I’m using the windows-7 machine to explain the scenario.

1. Go to start menu -> Run->type in “hddwiz.exe” then a menu appears.
2. Click Next and select “Install hardware manually option and click on next
3. Now select type of device you would like to install that is network adapter and click on next
4. Now, wait for a while till the menu appears then select “Microsoft” in manufacturer menu as shown in below image then select “Microsoft loop back adapter” and click on next.
5. Wait till the application gets installed and click on finish to finish the configuration.
6. Now open network adapter’s menu Go to run->ncpa.cpl now the Microsoft adapter what have installed will be available in the network connections menu.

Connecting a Device to Host machine through the cloud:
1. Open GNS3 VM through GUI and click on all server button then drag the cloud to workspace area as shown below.
2. Right click on the cloud then add the loop adapter click on cloud->Ethernet interface and select “Show special Ethernet” add adapter and the adapter you have created (Loop Back)
Note: if you are using GNS3 VM above 2.0 then choose option run on the local machine for cloud and switch/hub connection.
3. After adding the adapter, go to the adapter setting ipv4 and assign any IP address Eg: I have assigned IP Address of “” subnet
Note: This step should be done on host machine
4. Now connect the cloud to switch/hub then from switch/hub to router/Firewall.
5. Now assign the same subnet IP address to the interface which is indirectly connected to cloud then configure the device for routing.
6. Now ping the device to see you are connected to host machine or not. Below snippet explains it well.
7. Let’s ping the device from the router as well as ping the router from the host machine.

From router/From Host Machine:
Note: Do not forget to add router IP as a gateway on the host machines network adapter.
